Looking for a sweet, fruity beverage to enjoy on a hot day? Pour yourself a glass of low-sugar easy strawberry agua fresca for a tasty and refreshing treat!

Easy Strawberry Agua Fresca in two glasses on a decorate placemat next to paper straws

Finding interesting drinks that don’t contain sugar or alcohol can be a challenge. I usually go with water or unsweetened iced tea, but I’ll admit they aren’t the most exciting options.

So when I’m in the mood for something sweet and fun, I love making a batch of this easy strawberry agua fresca! All you need is some fresh strawberries, water, a pinch of salt, and a blender.

It’s up to you if you want to add a little honey or other sweetener. Keep in mind that if the strawberries are fresh and ripe, they will be very sweet on their own!

The name translates to “fresh water” in Spanish, and this beverage is very popular in Mexico, Central America, and the U.S. It’s more like flavored water than juice, so it’s lower in calories. It makes a perfect warm-weather, low-carb drink.

The next time you’re looking for a fun drink to enjoy with friends or to simply cool you down on a hot day, definitely give this yummy recipe a try.

How to make easy strawberry agua fresca

This tasty beverage comes together in 2 simple steps with just 4 ingredients.

Step 1: Place the strawberries, water, salt, and sweetener (if using) in a blender.

Step 2: Purée until smooth.

That’s it! Pour a glass over ice and store the rest in the refrigerator. Be sure to give it a good stir each time you’re ready for more.

Variations for this recipe

This refreshing drink is easy to customize to your taste. You could whip up a different flavor every time!

I love strawberries, but you could use any kind of fresh fruit to flavor your water. Peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe, nectarines, blueberries, or a combination would all be delicious. Feel free to add a squeeze of citrus juice as well!

You could also try a watery vegetable like cucumber or celery instead of fruit. Cucumber with fresh lime juice and mint is quite tasty!

The sweetener is optional, but if the fruit or vegetable you’re using isn’t very sweet on its own, then it can make a big difference in the flavor. I prefer honey, but you could use agave, stevia, or whatever else you like.

If your fruit is very ripe, you probably won’t need any sweetener.

Do you enjoy coconut water? Feel free to use it in place of some or all of the plain water in this recipe!

Storage

This is a great recipe to make ahead of time and enjoy over a few days. You can never go wrong having a delicious, low-calorie beverage ready for you!

Simply store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator and enjoy within 3-4 days. Be sure to give it a good stir before you pour a glass.

Hey Shelby. You’ve got me drooling! Even the pictures look good enough to eat (or should I say drink). Being a total foodie but diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I’ve been looking at different ways to satisfy my cravings without driving my blood sugar through the roof. I recently read an article that said that a recent study, published in the American Association of Medicine’s journal of internal medicine (JAMA Internal Medicine), found that a plant-based diet could actually help prevent type 2 diabetes. And, your recipe fits right into such a plant-based diet. I’m absolutely thrilled.

Thanks, Evelyn! I’m (clearly) not exclusively plant-based, but do eat a lot of plant-based meals. If you want to see my vegan recipes, see the “Special Diets” tab above and select “Vegan.” I’d love to hear about some of your favorite diabetic-friendly recipes!
