Several Baked Oysters and Apples on a white serving plate

When it comes to raw seafood, fresh oysters are one of the most sought-after menu items. But not everyone finds the idea of eating raw shellfish all that appetizing.

That’s when this recipe for baked oysters and apples comes in handy! The tender, flavorful oysters combined with crispy panko bread crumbs and fresh apples is absolutely irresistible.

This dish is also a great happy medium for anyone that loves fried oysters but wants to cut back on fried foods. The panko bread crumbs give the oysters just the right amount of crispiness.

If you’ve never enjoyed oysters at home, this is the recipe to try! It’s easy to make and delicious enough to appease even the biggest oyster skeptic.

How to make baked oysters and apples

This dish involves frying the apple topping in a skillet, shucking the oysters, then combining it all and throwing it in the oven.

Step 1: Heat the oil and butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Once hot, add the onions and sauté until translucent.

Step 2: Squeeze the juice from the lemon over the diced apple.

Step 3: Add the diced apple and panko to the skillet. Mix thoroughly until the bread crumbs are no longer dry, then remove from heat.

Step 4: Add the cardamom and pepper. Stir well and set aside.

Step 5: Preheat the oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with a thin layer of rock salt.

Step 6: Shuck the oysters, cup-side down, reserving as much liquid as possible in the cup.

Step 7: Place the oysters on the cookie sheet, using the rock salt to keep them from tipping over.

Step 8: Divide the apple mixture between the oysters.

Step 9: Place the baking sheet in the oven and roast the oysters for about 10 minutes.

I recommend serving immediately while the topping is hot and the oysters are tender!

Health benefits of oysters

Oysters are considered a delicacy around the world. You may have even heard that they’re an aphrodisiac.

But did you know that they’re also incredibly good for you?

In fact, oysters are quite low in calories but packed with protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and nutrients. They’re a great source of zinc, iron, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Combine that with the crispy panko apple topping, and you have yourself a nutrient-dense snack that will be gone in the blink of an eye!

Storage

Once cooked, any leftover oysters should be placed in an air-tight container in the refrigerator within 2 hours. They will last for up to 4 days.

However, I highly recommend enjoying this dish right away. When the bread crumbs are crispy and the oysters are tender, it will be at its absolute best!

Other delicious shellfish recipes

If you want to enjoy shellfish at home but don’t want to eat it raw, there are plenty of ways you can cook oysters, mussels, and clams! In fact, cooking can really enhance their natural flavors. Here are a few of my favorite shellfish recipes that I know you’ll enjoy:

  • Oyster Chowder
  • Mussels in White Wine Sauce
