Traditional tartar sauces can be a little heavy for my taste. After all, they’re really just mayonnaise with some extra flavors.

That’s why I love this light tartar sauce! By replacing most of the mayonnaise with plain yogurt, you still get a cool and creamy sauce that goes perfectly with your favorite seafood or chicken dishes, but with a fraction of the calories and fat.

And it couldn’t be easier to whip up. Simply combine the ingredients! Then, you can have fresh tartar sauce to enjoy guilt-free any time.

How to make light tartar sauce

Ready to see how easy it is to make this sauce for all your favorite dishes?

Ingredients for the tartar sauce in individual ramekins

Step 2: Chop the capers.

Step 3: In a medium bowl or large jar, mix together the plain Greek yogurt, light mayonnaise, scallion, capers, and sweet pickle relish. Stir until well combined.

That’s it! It probably takes less than 5 minutes to make.

I do recommend refrigerating the sauce if you have time, as this will help deepen the flavors.

What to eat with tartar sauce

Now that you have this tasty tartar on hand, what should you serve it with?

Of course, crab cakes and tartar sauce are a classic pairing. Try my homemade crab cakes, which are oven-baked for a lighter and healthier dish. It also goes very nicely with my easy scallop cakes.

It will truly pair well with any kind of fish. Just cook up a few fish fillets in the oven or on the grill, then dip into some tartar sauce and enjoy!

Another classic pairing is chicken or turkey tenders. Tartar sauce goes well with anything crips and crunchy!

Storage

The great part about this homemade tartar sauce is that it will last for a while!

As long as the scallion is relatively fresh and your tartar sauce is properly stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, this sauce will easily stay fresh for 1 week and even as long as 2 weeks.
